Oil, Tariffs, and Fighter Jets: Russia Woos India Amid Rising US Pressure

by admin477351

Russia launched a major diplomatic and defense offensive to solidify its ties with India, countering recent US economic pressure and claims by Donald Trump. The move comes as the US has slapped 50% tariffs on India, with half of those duties explicitly announced as penalties for India’s oil purchases from Russia.

Trump further escalated the pressure by claiming Prime Minister Modi had assured him India would halt Russian oil imports. This prompted swift reactions from both New Delhi and Moscow.

India’s MEA asserted its right to procure energy based on “national objective” and the “interests of the Indian consumer.” Russia’s Ambassador Denis Alipov echoed this, calling the oil trade “very beneficial” for India’s economy and welfare.

Alipov then pivoted to defense, the “backbone” of the relationship. He detailed a massive push for future cooperation, including the Su-57 fighter, drones, and advanced radars, building on the success of joint projects like the BrahMos missile and T-90 tanks.

This strategy showcases Russia’s commitment to providing high-end military technology and shared battlefield experience, as seen in “Operation Sindoor” and the “Indra” joint exercises. The message is clear: while the US imposes tariffs, Russia offers partnership.
