SoftBank Banks $5.8 Billion from Nvidia Sale to Boost OpenAI Holdings

by admin477351

Japanese tech investor SoftBank has sold its Nvidia shares for $5.8 billion, redirecting the proceeds into its expanding OpenAI partnership. The sale comes amid rising questions over whether AI-sector valuations are sustainable.
SoftBank’s quarterly results showed strong profits, reflecting gains in AI investments even as chip stocks cooled. The firm also reduced its T-Mobile position to strengthen liquidity for future bets.
CFO Yoshimitsu Goto said the company must mobilize capital for a massive $30 billion AI investment this year. He stressed the timing was coincidental and not linked to any negative outlook for Nvidia.
Markets reacted swiftly: Nvidia shares slipped 3.5%, while other tech names including Arm and Micron followed suit, highlighting how sensitive investors remain to AI sentiment.
