The European Union is set to bolster its relationship with Azerbaijan by providing up to €200 million in grants aimed at enhancing the country’s transport, energy, and digital infrastructure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the funding during her visit to Baku, indicating that this financial commitment could potentially catalyze up to €2 billion in combined public and private investment.
During her meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of strengthening energy ties and regional connectivity between the EU and Azerbaijan. Their discussions also touched upon the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As part of these efforts, von der Leyen suggested a new EU-Azerbaijan connectivity partnership, highlighting the increasing significance of Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe.
Since the EU and Azerbaijan’s energy agreement in 2022, gas exports from Azerbaijan to EU member states have surged by approximately 65%, according to Aliyev. Currently, ten EU countries are importing Azerbaijani gas, reflecting the growing energy cooperation between the two regions.
In addition to infrastructure support, von der Leyen announced a €20 million program dedicated to assisting border communities in Azerbaijan. This initiative will focus on various critical areas such as healthcare, mine clearance, rural development, and support for small businesses, aiming to improve the quality of life in these regions.
Von der Leyen’s visit to the South Caucasus will continue with talks in Armenia, as she seeks to further regional cooperation and address shared challenges. This engagement underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering stability and economic development in the region.
