Heathrow Airport has ceded its title as Europe’s busiest airport to Istanbul Airport after passenger numbers in July revealed a shift. Istanbul Airport managed to accommodate 8.15 million travelers during the month, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger traffic compared to the same month last year, while Istanbul saw a 2.3% increase in its figures.
The decline at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from conflicts in the Middle East. This development has reignited discussions around the need for Heathrow’s proposed third runway, which aims to alleviate capacity issues. The airport currently operates at near full capacity with its two runways, and the proposed £33 billion expansion could significantly boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers.
Heathrow officials have pointed to these latest figures as evidence of the urgent need for additional capacity to enhance the UK’s global connectivity and bolster trade and tourism. In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and continuous operations. It currently has three runways, with a fourth expected to be operational by the end of 2026, allowing it to handle more passenger traffic efficiently.
In the meantime, other UK airports have reported record-breaking numbers for July. London Stansted and Manchester airports both experienced their busiest July on record, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester 3.4 million. These figures highlight the growing demand for air travel in the UK, further emphasizing the need for expanded airport infrastructure.
