In Tivat, Montenegro, European Union leaders convened with representatives from six Western Balkan countries, aiming to expedite regional integration and advance EU enlargement efforts. The summit included leaders from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia, all gathered to discuss shared prosperity, stability, and enhanced cooperation with the European Union.
The discussions focused on essential topics such as economic reforms, security cooperation, defense coordination, and measures to fortify resilience against cyber threats. EU officials reiterated that enlargement is a strategic priority, urging candidate countries to persist with necessary reforms for EU membership. The summit also evaluated the progress of the EU’s growth plan for the Western Balkans, which is designed to stimulate economic development and strengthen regional connections with the bloc.
Among the Western Balkan nations, Montenegro and Albania are considered the most advanced candidates for future EU membership. However, other countries in the region face political and institutional obstacles on their paths to accession. European leaders are also expected to deliberate on further financial support and initiatives aimed at expediting the accession process for qualifying countries.
As the summit unfolded, regional tensions, particularly between Serbia and Montenegro following recent security-related disputes, remained a point of concern. Despite these issues, officials emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration as the Western Balkans progress toward European integration.
