France, Spain, UK Experience Unprecedented Heatwave in May

by admin477351

Western Europe is currently grappling with an unseasonably intense heatwave, as France, Spain, and the United Kingdom report record-breaking temperatures for the month of May. In France alone, over 350 towns, predominantly in the western regions, have logged their highest ever May temperatures, with Landes in the southwest hitting a peak of 37.1°C. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom also set a new national record for May with a sweltering 34.8°C recorded at Kew Gardens in London.

Weather experts have indicated that temperatures across multiple European regions are soaring 12°C to 13°C above the seasonal norms. This heatwave is expected to persist for several more days, with forecasts suggesting that some areas in Spain might experience temperatures climbing to 40°C later in the week. Spanish meteorologists are also cautioning about the likelihood of “tropical nights,” which occur when nighttime temperatures do not fall below 20°C.

French meteorological authorities have attributed the extreme heat conditions to a phenomenon known as a heat dome. This occurs when hot air from Morocco is trapped beneath a robust high-pressure system. They have raised alarms that such weather events are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. In response, France has placed 31 departments on high-temperature alerts, with some areas receiving the second-highest warning level. Notably, this is the first instance of France activating its national heat warning system in May since its inception in 2004.

As temperatures soared past 35°C in many French towns, Paris itself came close to reaching 33°C. Tragically, the extreme heat contributed to a fatality during a 10-kilometre race near Paris, where a participant reportedly suffered a heart attack. Several others participating in the event were hospitalized in critical condition. In Spain, the southern regions have already reported temperatures as high as 38°C, with further increases anticipated throughout the week.

Climate experts highlight that heatwaves in Europe are emerging earlier in the year and are becoming increasingly prevalent, a trend linked to long-term climate change. As the continent braces for more days of blistering heat, these conditions underscore the growing challenges posed by global warming.
