During a NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Romania have agreed to enhance their collaborative security efforts in the Black Sea by signing a new memorandum. The revised agreement aims to expand the joint task force’s responsibilities from merely clearing naval mines to also protecting critical infrastructure such as energy facilities, telecommunications networks, and undersea pipelines.
This trilateral initiative was initially established in response to heightened security concerns in the Black Sea following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. So far, the mission has successfully neutralized over 150 drifting naval mines, significantly improving maritime safety and safeguarding vital regional trade routes.
The enhanced cooperation is not only focused on security but also on the protection of key energy projects in the Black Sea region. All three countries involved have substantial interests in gas exploration and production activities there, making the protection of these assets crucial.
The agreement underscores Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Romania’s commitment to reinforcing regional security and ensuring the safety of strategic infrastructure. By broadening the scope of their joint efforts, these nations aim to mitigate risks and promote stability in an area of increasing geopolitical tension.
