Sanchez Denies Corruption Allegations Following Ex-Minister’s Conviction in Graft Case

by admin477351

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has firmly denied allegations of extensive corruption within his Socialist party, following the sentencing of a former senior official in a major graft case. The case involves government contracts awarded during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the former transport minister, Jose Luis Abalos, receiving a 24-year prison sentence for corruption-related charges.

Addressing parliament, Sanchez refuted the claims, suggesting that political adversaries were attempting to fabricate the notion of a widespread corruption scandal. He stated he was unaware of any illegal actions or dealings involving Abalos. The prime minister also faces mounting pressure as several investigations are underway concerning former associates and members of his family, including a court proceeding against his wife, Begona Gomez, on allegations of influence peddling.

Sanchez defended his administration by acknowledging the potential for errors but maintained that his government remains committed to its duties and will not be swayed by calls to step down. He accused his critics of leveraging these investigations to undermine his leadership.

Despite the controversy, opposition parties are demanding Sanchez’s resignation and the initiation of early elections. However, the prime minister has declared his intention to fulfill his term, which is set to conclude in 2027.
