In a significant escalation of the conflict, Russia unleashed a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv and nearby areas, utilizing the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for the third time in the ongoing war with Ukraine. The devastating assault resulted in at least four fatalities and about 100 injuries, as reported by Ukrainian authorities. The barrage targeted key locations in Kyiv and the surrounding city of Bila Tserkva, inflicting damage on residential buildings, educational institutions, a water facility, government offices, and a large market, with fires erupting in several districts.
Ukrainian officials reported that the attack involved nearly 600 drones and 90 missiles, including numerous ballistic missiles. Despite many being intercepted, several missiles hit central Kyiv, causing widespread destruction. Russia confirmed the deployment of the Oreshnik missile alongside other advanced systems, asserting the strikes were aimed at Ukrainian military infrastructure in retaliation for alleged Ukrainian attacks in Russian-controlled areas.
Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, noted that damage was observed in every district of the capital, with emergency teams working to rescue individuals trapped in shelters and extinguish fires from the explosions. Additionally, the assault inflicted damage on Ukraine’s National Art Museum and parts of the foreign ministry building, with Ukrainian officials condemning the strikes as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and cultural sites.
International reaction was swift, with European leaders denouncing the assault. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the use of the Oreshnik missile a dangerous escalation, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized it as reckless. European Union representatives accused Russia of employing terror tactics against civilians. The Oreshnik missile, introduced by Russia in late 2024, can carry nuclear or conventional warheads and reportedly travels at hypersonic speeds, with Russian President Vladimir Putin claiming it is nearly impossible to intercept, although these claims have been met with skepticism by Western analysts.
